Question:

Donate pet to science? And end of life comfort

I’m really struggling right now and could use some advice from anyone who's been in a similar situation. My sweet old cat, Luna, who’s been with me for over 15 years, is not doing well. The vet recently informed us that her kidney failure is advancing rapidly, and there’s not much more we can do. I want to make sure her final days are as comfortable as possible, but I’m also trying to consider what might come after. I heard about donating pets to science and I’m torn—part of me thinks it would be a meaningful way to contribute, but the thought also breaks my heart. I love her so much and want to honor her in the best way I can. Has anyone gone through something like this? How did you make your decision, and what helped ease your pet’s final days? Any advice or comfort would be really appreciated right now.

Answer:

Hi there,

It sounds like you're considering some end-of-life options for your pet, and I'm here to help guide you through this difficult time. It's important to focus on your pet's comfort and dignity. Many pet owners wonder about donating their pet's body to science. This option can contribute to veterinary education and research, but you should ensure it's the right choice for you and aligns with your values and your pet’s needs. You might want to discuss this with local veterinary schools or programs that offer this service.

In terms of providing comfort at the end of life, consider creating a peaceful environment. Make sure your pet has a favorite blanket or bed and that their food and water are easily accessible. Gentle affection and staying close by can be soothing for both of you.

Watch for signs of pain or distress, such as restlessness, vocalizations, or changes in breathing or appetite, which may indicate a need for immediate veterinary support. Always follow your vet’s advice regarding pain management or hospice care.

If you’re uncertain about any symptoms or need support, please do not hesitate to book a video consult with us through Dial A Vet. We're here to offer guidance and support during this challenging time.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
