Question:

Dog with shifting eye swelling, vomiting, and increased thirst and no food intake

Help, I'm really worried about my dog and don’t know what to do. Over the past couple of days, my pup's been acting really strange. It started with this weird swelling around his eye that seems to move, almost as if it's shifting positions, and now he's constantly drinking water like he can't get enough of it. He's also been vomiting on and off, but the strangest part is that he's not interested in his food at all, which is super unusual for him since he's usually such a foodie. He's usually so energetic and full of life, but now he's just lethargic and not himself. I've been searching for answers everywhere but haven't found anything that matches all these symptoms. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their dog or have any advice on what could be going on? I'm planning to take him to the vet, but I’m looking for any insight or suggestions in the meantime—I'm feeling pretty helpless right now.

Answer:

Thank you for reaching out. It sounds like your dog is experiencing some distressing symptoms. The combination of shifting eye swelling, vomiting, increased thirst, and a lack of appetite can be concerning. These symptoms might indicate a few potential issues.

The eye swelling could be due to an allergic reaction, an infection, or even trauma. The vomiting and increased thirst might suggest dehydration, digestive upset, or possibly an underlying condition like kidney issues or diabetes.

At home, ensure your dog has plenty of fresh water to prevent dehydration. You might try offering bland foods such as boiled chicken and rice, which are gentle on the stomach, to see if your pet is interested in eating. Keep an eye on the eye swelling; if it worsens or spreads, it would be good to discuss this with a vet promptly.

Watch for signs such as continuous vomiting, lethargy, difficulty breathing, or if the eye swelling becomes severe, as these could signal a more serious issue requiring immediate veterinary care.

I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss these symptoms in more detail and determine the next best steps for your furry friend's health. We're here to help whenever you need us!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
