Dog with Bloody Stool on Adequan injections for Arthritis

I’m really worried about my dog, Max, and could use some advice. He's been on Adequan injections for his arthritis for the past couple of months, which seemed to help a lot with his mobility. But today, I noticed that his stool had some blood in it, and I’m freaking out a little. He’s been acting mostly normal, maybe a bit more tired than usual, but that’s also not completely out of character for him. I’m not sure if this could be a side effect of the shots, something he ate, or maybe it’s a separate issue altogether. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their dogs on Adequan? Should I get him to the vet ASAP, or is there something else I should look out for first?

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It's understandable to be worried if you notice your dog has bloody stool, especially when they're on medications like Adequan for arthritis. While Adequan is generally safe and used to help alleviate joint pain, it typically doesn't cause gastrointestinal issues like bloody stool.

There could be several reasons for the blood—this might include dietary changes, infections, parasites, or inflammation in the intestines. In some cases, other medications or supplements might interact in a way that irritates the gastrointestinal tract.

At home, you can monitor your dog's condition closely. Ensure they're staying hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate symptoms. Providing a bland diet, like boiled chicken and rice, can sometimes help alleviate mild digestive upset.

However, there are certain signs to be vigilant about. If your dog seems lethargic, is vomiting, has diarrhea with blood, or you notice a significant change in their behavior or appetite, it can indicate a more serious issue that requires immediate attention.

To ensure your furry friend's health is well managed, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. This way, we can discuss your dog's specific situation in more detail and determine the best course of action.
