Thank you for your question. I’m sorry to hear about your dog’s experience, and I can imagine how concerning this must be for you. There could be a few reasons for the sudden change in hearing after a dental procedure.
One possibility is that the anesthesia used during the tooth removal has caused temporary hearing loss, which does happen sometimes but usually resolves on its own. Another reason might be related to an inflammation or infection from the surgery, potentially impacting your dog’s ears. Although less common, age-related hearing loss and underlying ear conditions could also be factors that coincidentally became more noticeable after the procedure.
At home, observe your dog for signs like head shaking, ear scratching, or any discharge from the ears, as these could indicate ear issues needing attention. Keep your dog's environment safe by minimizing sudden loud noises and offering plenty of visual cues and touch-based communication to help them feel secure.
However, if you notice any unusual symptoms or if the hearing loss persists, it’s crucial to consult with a veterinarian for a thorough examination. Look out for signs like balance issues, ongoing ear discomfort, or changes in behavior. As always, if you have any worries or would like a more detailed discussion, I encourage you to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We're here to help!
Dog went deaf after tooth removal?
I need some advice. My 9-year-old Labrador, Bella, had a dental procedure yesterday to remove a few decayed teeth, and everything seemed fine at first. She's always been such a trooper at the vet, but now I'm really concerned. Since coming home, it seems like she can't hear me at all. Usually, she perks up at the sound of her treat bag or when I call her for dinner, but now it's like I'm invisible. I don't know if it's something to do with the anesthesia or maybe a side effect of the surgery itself. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their dog? I’m feeling so helpless and just want to make sure she’s okay. Any advice or thoughts on what might be going on would be really appreciated.
