I'm feeling completely overwhelmed right now and could really use some advice or insight about what just happened to my dog. Archie, my four-year-old golden retriever, was prescribed Prednisone and Amoxicillin just last week for a nasty skin infection. He seemed to be doing okay at first while on the meds, maybe a little more tired than usual, but nothing too alarming. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, he just collapsed yesterday and was gone before I could even get him to the vet. I’m heartbroken and confused because the vet didn’t mention any serious risks, and online information doesn't seem to explain such a sudden event. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could it have been a reaction to the medications, or am I missing something? I'm really struggling with the shock and need to understand if there was something more I could've done.
I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a pet is incredibly difficult, and it's important to understand what might have happened. Prednisone is a steroid that helps with inflammation, and Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to fight infections. While both are commonly prescribed and generally safe when used properly, there can be rare adverse reactions or complications.
One possibility is an allergic reaction, which can sometimes be severe and cause issues like difficulty breathing or collapse. Prednisone can also affect the heart and immune system, potentially leading to complications, especially if the underlying condition was severe. In some cases, interactions between medications or an undiagnosed health issue can contribute to such a sudden event.
At this point, a conclusive answer would typically require a veterinarian’s examination or a post-mortem analysis. However, reflecting on any symptoms your dog might have shown before passing—like lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing—could provide clues.
Going forward, if you notice signs like vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drinking, or changes in behavior when your pets are on medication, these are good reasons to check in with a veterinarian immediately.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
