I’m really hoping for some advice or maybe shared experiences here. So, I’ve been feeding my dog, Max, Hills Prescription I/D food for his sensitive tummy for almost a year now, and he’s always gobbled it up with no issues. Suddenly, though, he just won't eat it at all! It’s like he’s lost all interest overnight. If it was just a one-off thing, I wouldn’t be too worried, but it’s been a few days now, and I’m starting to get concerned. I’ve tried adding a little warm water to it and even mixing in some plain boiled chicken, which he usually loves, but no dice. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their dog? Do you think the formula might've changed, or could something else be going on here? Max is usually the most food-motivated pup I know, so any tips or insights would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! It's not uncommon for dogs to suddenly reject their food, even if it's something they usually enjoy. There could be several reasons why your dog has decided he doesn't like his Hills Prescription I/D food anymore.
Firstly, it's possible that he's bored of the taste or texture, especially if he's been on it for a while. Dogs also associate their diet with their overall wellbeing, so if your pup has felt unwell after eating, he might correlate that feeling with his food. Dental issues, such as a sore tooth or gum problem, can also make chewing uncomfortable.
At home, you can try warming up the food slightly to enhance its aroma or mix in a little bit of cooked chicken or low-sodium broth to make it more enticing, provided these additions are safe given your dog's health needs. However, ensure any changes align with your vet's guidance, especially if your dog is on a specific diet for health reasons.
Keep an eye out for warning signs like significant weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy, as these may indicate a more serious issue that needs immediate attention.
If your dog's disinterest continues, or if you're concerned about his health, it would be a good idea to set up a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can help develop a plan tailored to his dietary needs and mood. Looking forward to helping you both!
