Dog reverse sneezing/hiccuping for extended periods of time (days)

I'm really worried about my dog, Max. For the past few days, he's been having these episodes that seem like reverse sneezing or maybe even hiccuping—I'm not entirely sure. They started out of nowhere and now it seems like he's doing it several times a day. It’s like he’s suddenly trying to catch his breath, and it sounds almost like a honking noise. He’s never done anything like this before and it’s stressing me out. He seems okay otherwise—eating, drinking, and playing as usual—but I can’t shake this nagging feeling that something might be wrong. I’ve tried doing some research, but I'm overwhelmed by the information and honestly, a little scared about what it could potentially mean. I haven't had the chance to get to the vet yet, so I'm hoping to get some insight here. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Answer

Hi there, thanks for reaching out with your concern. Reverse sneezing or prolonged hiccuping can be quite alarming, but let’s talk through what might be happening.

Dogs often reverse sneeze when their soft palate is irritated. This can be triggered by allergies, excitement, a sudden change in temperature, or inhalation of irritants like dust or pollen. Though it usually resolves quickly, prolonged bouts could indicate an underlying issue, such as an upper respiratory infection or even nasal mites.

For at-home care, try gently massaging your dog's throat to shorten the episode or offering some water to ease any irritation. Keeping your dog calm and in a stress-free environment may also help reduce the frequency of these spells.

Pay attention to any additional symptoms like nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, or difficulty breathing. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires veterinary attention.

It’s always best to get a professional opinion when something unusual occurs. I’d recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet for a thorough evaluation and personalized advice to ensure your pup is in the best of health.
