Question:

Dog puking in the morning

I'm reaching out because I'm really worried about my dog, Max. For the past few mornings, he's been throwing up this yellowish liquid as soon as he wakes up. It's not a lot, but it’s happening every single morning now. He's totally fine during the rest of the day—eating, playing, and acting like his usual self. But seeing him vomit every morning is stressing me out. We tried changing his feeding schedule to later in the evening, thinking maybe his stomach is empty overnight, but it hasn't helped. I really want to fix whatever's going on—he’s my baby and seeing him like this is breaking my heart. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! I’m sorry to hear your pup isn’t feeling their best. Let’s look into some possible reasons for morning vomiting and what you can do to help.

Sometimes, dogs vomit in the morning because their stomach is empty. This is known as bilious vomiting syndrome. When the stomach is empty for too long, bile can irritate the lining, leading to nausea. Try giving your dog a small snack before bedtime to see if that helps.

Other causes might include dietary indiscretion, where your dog might have eaten something they shouldn’t have. If they’ve been outdoors, they could’ve come across something unsavory. Also, consider any recent changes in diet or treats that might not be sitting well with them.

At home, ensure your dog has access to fresh water to stay hydrated, especially if they’ve been vomiting. You might also try feeding them a bland diet, like boiled chicken and rice, for a day or two.

If your dog seems lethargic, has repeated vomiting, diarrhea, or if you notice blood in the vomit, it’s time to seek professional help, as these can be signs of more serious conditions.

Let’s figure out what’s going on together. I recommend scheduling a video consult with our team at Dial A Vet. We’re here to help you and your furry friend feel better soon!

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
