Help, I'm really worried right now. My four-year-old Labrador, Max, managed to sneak away with one of those small 3.5x5.5" plush bone toys yesterday, and I can't find it anywhere in the house. Worst case scenario, I'm pretty sure he ate it. So I rushed him to the vet, but they said he seemed okay for now and might just pass it. They gave me Laxatone to help things move along, and I’ve been anxiously waiting for him to poop it out ever since. It’s been nearly a day, and Max hasn’t thrown up or had a good bowel movement. I’m really freaking out here. How long does this usually take? Should I be watching for any specific warning signs to take him back to the vet immediately? Max seems his usual goofy self, but I'm a nervous wreck just thinking about what might happen. Any advice or similar experiences would really help ease my mind. Thanks a ton, everyone!
Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It sounds like you've been through quite a scare! When a dog ingests a foreign object like a plush toy, it can be worrying, but you're on the right track by acting quickly.
The time it takes for your dog to pass the toy depends on several factors, such as the size of your dog and his digestive health. Laxatone can indeed help by lubricating the stool and making it easier for your dog to pass the toy. However, it could still take a couple of days for the plush bone to work its way through your dog's system.
In the meantime, keep an eye on him for the following signs, which might indicate an obstruction or distress: vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, or bloating. If you notice any of these symptoms, or if the toy hasn't passed in 2-3 days, it's crucial to consult a vet as these could be signs of a blockage which might need immediate attention.
Encourage your pup to stay hydrated and offer gentle, bland foods in small amounts, like cooked chicken and rice, to keep his digestive system moving smoothly.
