Question:

Dog pancreatitis/liver failure...are miracles possible?

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now and could really use some support and advice. My sweet Labrador, Daisy, was just diagnosed with pancreatitis, and to make matters worse, her liver isn’t doing well either. The vet said it’s not looking good, and I’m just shattered. Daisy is my best friend; she’s been with me through thick and thin, from college exams to my first real job. I can’t imagine life without her wagging tail and goofy grin greeting me every day. Right now, she’s on medication and a special diet, but she seems so tired and isn’t her usual playful self. Have any of you been through something similar? Are there any treatments or miracle recoveries you’ve experienced? I’m clinging to any hope I can find right now and would appreciate any stories or advice from fellow pet parents. Thank you.

Answer:

Hello there! I'm so sorry to hear about the struggles you're facing with your furry friend. Living with conditions like pancreatitis or liver failure can indeed be challenging, but miracles can sometimes happen with the right care and management.

Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas, which helps in digestion, becomes inflamed. This can be caused by a high-fat diet, obesity, or other health problems. Liver failure, on the other hand, means the liver can't perform its vital functions effectively. This may result from toxins, infections, or congenital issues.

For both conditions, here are a few at-home tips: ensure your dog is on a low-fat, easily digestible diet and encourage gentle exercise. Keeping them hydrated is crucial as well.

Watch for signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, yellowing of the eyes or gums, or a distended abdomen. These may indicate that immediate veterinary attention is necessary.

While every case is different, some dogs do manage to live happy lives with these conditions through a structured treatment plan. It's essential to have a supportive veterinary team by your side. I highly encourage you to book a video consult with a vet here on Dial A Vet. This way, we can provide personalized guidance and support tailored to your dog's needs.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
