Question:

Dog may have gotten into my medicine

I'm kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. Earlier today, I accidentally left the cap off my bottle of ibuprofen, and when I got home, I found the bottle knocked over on the floor in the living room. I have a four-year-old Labrador named Max, and I'm worried he might have gotten into it while sniffing around. I haven’t seen any pills on the floor, but I'm not sure how many were left in the bottle to begin with. Max seems okay at the moment, just maybe a bit more lethargic than usual, but I’m worried it could be something serious. I read somewhere that this could be dangerous for dogs, and now I'm panicking. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Should I take him to the vet immediately or wait to see if he shows any more symptoms? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Oh no, it sounds like your curious pup might have gotten into something they shouldn’t have. Dogs are naturally inquisitive, and unfortunately, human medications can be quite harmful to them. The specific risks depend on the type of medication and the amount ingested. Common symptoms of medication poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors, or even seizures.

Right now, the best thing you can do is keep a close eye on your dog. If you notice any unusual behavior or symptoms, such as drooling, restlessness, or changes in appetite or coordination, this could indicate a more serious issue. It’s also critically important to identify exactly what and how much your dog might have ingested. You can try contacting your local veterinarian or a pet poison hotline to get immediate advice.

In terms of keeping your dog comfortable at home, ensure they have plenty of water and a quiet space to rest. Avoid giving them any additional food or medicine unless directed by a professional. If symptoms escalate or if you're unsure about the next steps, it’s best to consult with a veterinarian promptly.

I strongly recommend booking a video consultation with a vet through Dial A Vet. It’s a great way to get personalized guidance and peace of mind for you and better care for your furry friend.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
