Dog limping after IVDD treatment, clear X-ray, no additional symptoms. ??

I'm having a bit of a crisis here with my sweet dog, Max, and I could really use some advice or words of comfort. Max was recently treated for IVDD, and everything seemed to be going okay. However, just yesterday I noticed he's started limping on his back leg. We rushed him to the vet for an X-ray, but it came out clear, which I guess is a good thing. It's so strange because besides the limping, he’s acting perfectly normal — eating, drinking, playing, all the usual Max stuff. I’m trying to stay calm, but I’m worried we might have missed something important. It’s heartbreaking to see him struggle like this, especially after he just went through the whole IVDD ordeal. Has anyone dealt with something similar? How concerned should I be if he doesn’t seem to be in pain otherwise? Any insight would be hugely appreciated, thank you!

Answer

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear that your dog is limping after IVDD treatment. It's understandable to be concerned, especially since the X-ray didn't show anything new. Limping can be a common occurrence during recovery as your dog's body is adjusting and healing. It might be due to residual pain, muscle weakness, or slight nerve irritation which are all possibilities in a post-IVDD situation.

At home, keeping your dog as comfortable as possible is important. Ensure they have a quiet, cozy resting area to help minimize movement and stress on their back and limbs. Try to limit jumping or running and consider ramps for getting onto furniture if necessary. Gentle massages can sometimes help with muscle stiffness, but ensure your pup enjoys it and doesn't seem uncomfortable.

Keep an eye out for concerning signs like worsening limp, changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or difficulty with bathroom habits. These might suggest that the situation needs further attention.

If the limping persists or you're noticing any of these additional symptoms, it would be wise to have a follow-up consultation. You can easily book a video consult through Dial A Vet, where we can provide more personalized guidance and reassurance.
