Dog having abdominal discomfort, pooped out ketchup packets

Help, I’m really worried about my dog, Max! He's been acting super weird today and I don’t know what to do. Earlier, I noticed he seemed uncomfortable, sort of pacing around and not settling down like he usually does. When I let him out in the yard, he ended up pooping out two ketchup packets. I didn’t even know he got into them! I have no idea how he managed to eat them in the first place, and now I’m freaking out about what else he might have snuck past me. Since then, he’s been lying down, looking a bit sad and hasn’t touched his dinner, which is so unlike him. Any suggestions on what I should do next? Should I rush him to the vet, or is there something I can do to help him feel better? Thank you!

Answer

Thanks for your question—I'm really glad you reached out. It sounds like your pup might be in some discomfort after passing those ketchup packets. Ingesting non-food items, also known as pica, can often lead to issues like abdominal pain. These packets might've irritated your dog's digestive tract or even caused a partial blockage, prompting the discomfort you're noticing.

At home, you can help by ensuring your dog has plenty of fresh water and is kept calm and rested. Offering soft, bland foods like boiled chicken and rice can be soothing to their stomach while their digestive system recovers. However, keep a close eye on them.

Look out for signs such as persistent vomiting, refusal to eat or drink, lethargy, or if they’re having trouble pooping again. If you notice any of these symptoms, it may indicate a more serious issue like an intestinal blockage, and it’s important to seek veterinary care promptly.

To ensure your pup’s safety and get tailored advice for your situation, I recommend scheduling a video consult with a Dial A Vet professional. They can provide further guidance and help you decide if an in-person visit is necessary.
