Question:

Dog has sore around nail

I could really use some advice about my dog, Bailey. Over the past few days, I noticed she's been licking her front paw more than usual, and tonight I found a sore on the skin right around one of her nails. It looks kind of tender and red, and I’m not sure if it’s infected or maybe just irritated. She’s been avoiding putting weight on that paw, too, which really worries me. The weather’s gotten colder lately, and we’ve been going on our regular walks through the park, which is a bit muddy—could that have anything to do with it? I’ve been gently cleaning it with warm water, but I’m not sure if that’s enough. The vet's office won’t be open until Monday, and I am wondering if there’s anything I can do to help her feel better in the meantime. Any home remedies or advice would be hugely appreciated! Bailey is usually so energetic, and seeing her in discomfort just breaks my heart. Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions.

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that your dog has a sore around the nail. Let's go through a few possibilities to help you understand what might be going on.

Sores in this area can often be caused by things like ingrown nails, bacterial or fungal infections, or even an injury from playing or walking on rough surfaces. Sometimes, moisture can get trapped around the paw, leading to skin irritation.

At home, you can gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap, and then dry it thoroughly to help prevent any infections from developing. You might also try to keep your dog from licking the area, as this can sometimes make things worse.

Keep an eye out for any signs that the issue might be more serious. These include swelling, a discharge of pus, increased redness, or if your dog begins to limp or seems in pain. If you notice any of these changes, it's best to consult with a veterinarian to ensure your pup gets the proper care.

I’d recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss your dog's symptoms in more detail. This way, we can provide specific advice and determine if an in-person visit is needed. Looking forward to helping you and your furry friend!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
