Dog has been sick for 1.5 years - vets don't know how to stop it... I'm at my wits' (and wallet's) end.

Help, what do I do? I'm really at a loss here. So my sweet golden retriever, Max, has been dealing with this mystery illness for a year and a half now, and it’s just getting so overwhelming. Every morning around 6 AM, like clockwork, he starts coughing and sometimes throws up, and we've been to so many vets trying to figure it out but no concrete answers. He's still got his playful moments and his appetite hasn't completely vanished, but seeing him like this every day is breaking my heart. We've tried different diets, medications, tests... you name it, we've done it, and no one seems to have a solution. It's exhausting, and I’m worried each day about what might happen. Has anyone else been through something like this? Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated — I just want Max to feel better.

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried, and I truly empathize with the frustration and concern you're feeling over your dog's ongoing health issues. Chronic illness in pets can be tough, not just emotionally, but financially too.

There are several possibilities for ongoing sickness in dogs, such as chronic infections, immune system disorders, allergies, or gastrointestinal diseases like inflammatory bowel disease. Sometimes, metabolic disorders such as liver or kidney disease can cause ongoing issues as well. It might also be worth considering whether environmental factors or stress might be playing a role in your dog's health.

At home, you can focus on ensuring their environment is as stress-free as possible; a calm space can sometimes make a significant difference. Providing a consistent diet, ideally one that is hypoallergenic or recommended by your vet, can help manage symptoms. Keep a detailed diary of symptoms, food intake, and any possible stressors, which might help in identifying patterns.

Watch for signs such as significant weight loss, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy, or any changes in behavior, as these can indicate that the problem is escalating and may require urgent attention.

It would be beneficial to arrange a video consult with us at Dial A Vet to explore your dog's medical history in more detail and discuss a plan moving forward. We're here to help support you and your dog through this challenging time.
