Dog died at dog boarding

I’m reaching out because I’m just devastated and don’t know where else to turn. I recently had to board my dog, Max, at a place I thought was trustworthy while I was away for work. He was a happy, healthy 5-year-old golden retriever, full of life and energy. I just got a call that he passed away suddenly while at the boarding facility, and I’m completely heartbroken and confused. They’re saying it was sudden, but I can’t wrap my head around this. I can’t help but think maybe something went wrong or if he was stressed being away from home. Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences? I don’t know what steps to take, whether legally or just for peace of mind. It feels like I’ve lost a family member, and I’m so lost right now. Any guidance would be so appreciated.

Answer

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's passing. Losing a pet, especially in such unexpected circumstances, is incredibly difficult, and I'm here to help as much as I can.

When a dog dies unexpectedly at a boarding facility, it can be due to a few reasons. Sometimes, underlying health conditions like heart disease or an unnoticed injury can play a part. Stress from being in a new environment might also contribute, especially if your dog had anxiety.

Please reach out to the boarding facility to get detailed information about what happened. It might be beneficial to request a necropsy (animal autopsy) to understand the cause more clearly. This can offer closure and help make sense of the loss.

At home, give yourself some time to grieve and gather support from loved ones. If you have other pets, they might also notice the absence, so providing comfort and maintaining routines could be helpful for them too.

Watch for signs in your other pets such as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, or increased anxiety, as they might be affected by the loss.
