I'm reaching out because I could really use some advice concerning my sweet dog, Max. He's been diagnosed with mild-moderate hip dysplasia and mild osteoarthritis. We've been following the vet's recommendations on exercise and medication, but I've noticed that every time we take him for a walk, even if it's just a short one, he seems to develop a stiff gait afterwards. It's breaking my heart to see him struggle, and I'm worried that what we're doing might not be the best for him. Should we reconsider our approach or try something different? Has anyone else gone through something similar with their fur babies and found a plan that helped? I just want to ensure we're making the right decisions to keep him comfortable and happy. Any advice or experiences you could share would be so appreciated. Thank you!
Hello there! It sounds like you’re doing everything you can to keep your dog happy and comfortable, which is fantastic. Hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis can indeed make movement a bit challenging for our furry friends. When your dog has a stiff gait after walks, it may be a sign that the current activity level or management plan needs a little tweaking.
These conditions can cause joint pain and stiffness, especially after exercise. While mild to moderate cases can often be managed with lifestyle adjustments, each dog reacts differently. You might try reducing the walk length or switching from walking to another form of low-impact exercise, like swimming, to see if it helps alleviate stiffness. Range of motion exercises or gentle massage can also be beneficial.
Keep an eye on any signs that might indicate increased discomfort, such as limping, decreased activity levels, or difficulty getting up. If you notice any of these signs persisting or worsening, it might be time to adjust the plan further.
