Dog Chronic Liver Disease Support

Help, I'm at a loss and really need some advice. My sweet dog, Max, has been diagnosed with chronic liver disease, and I'm feeling overwhelmed. The vet has put him on a specialized diet and some medications, but I'm constantly worried if I'm doing all that I can for him. He's been more lethargic lately, and sometimes he doesn't want to eat at all, which makes me panic since he needs his meds with food. It's breaking my heart to see him this way, and I'm torn between following the vet's advice and considering alternative treatments I've read about. Has anyone else gone through this with their dog? What helped, and what should I be cautious about? Any insights or support would be greatly appreciated. I just want to do the best for my boy and help him feel better.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out about your dog’s chronic liver disease. Managing this condition can feel overwhelming, but with the right care and attention, you can help your furry friend feel more comfortable.

Chronic liver disease in dogs can be caused by various factors, including infections, genetic predispositions, certain medications, or toxins. It's important to follow a veterinarian-recommended diet, often low in copper and protein, to reduce the liver's workload. Frequent small meals can also support liver function more effectively.

At home, ensure your dog has a calm environment with plenty of fresh water and regular exercise, appropriate for their condition. It's crucial to monitor for signs that may indicate worsening liver function, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination and thirst, lethargy, or changes in behavior. If you notice any of these signs, or if your pet seems uncomfortable, a prompt veterinary consultation is necessary.

Regular check-ups and blood tests are vital to monitor the disease’s progression. Keeping track of your pet's weight, appetite, and behavior will provide valuable information for your veterinarian.

I encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet if you have specific questions or need further guidance on managing your pet’s needs. We'll work together to provide the best care for your dog.
