Dog can't keep food down but hasn't lost his appetite.

Help, I'm really worried about my dog and could use some advice. My 5-year-old lab, Max, has always been a hearty eater, finishing his meals in record time, but for the past couple of days, he hasn't been able to keep his food down. The weird thing is, his appetite is as strong as ever—he gets excited at mealtime and eats with his usual enthusiasm, but soon after, he ends up vomiting. I've switched his food to see if that helps, but no luck so far. His energy levels are still pretty high, and he seems his usual happy self, but seeing him throw up multiple times a day is distressing. It’s breaking my heart, and I feel helpless. I’m not sure if it's something serious or just a bug that'll pass. How concerned should I be, and what should I try next before rushing him to the vet? I really need some guidance!

Answer

Thank you for your question. It sounds like your pup is dealing with a frustrating issue. When a dog can't keep food down but still has an appetite, it might be due to several factors, ranging from mild to more concerning.

The most common cause is simple indigestion or eating something that disagrees with them. Other possibilities include more serious conditions like gastritis, an obstruction, or stress-related issues. Please ensure that your dog isn't eating too quickly, as this can sometimes cause vomiting. You can try feeding them smaller, more frequent meals and keeping them calm after eating.

Watch for signs such as dehydration, lethargy, or excessive vomiting, and make a note if you see blood in the vomit, as this could indicate a more serious problem. If these symptoms occur, it's a good idea to seek veterinary care immediately.

In the meantime, offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice in small portions might help settle their stomach. Make sure they're staying hydrated, too, as dehydration can quickly become dangerous.

If your dog’s symptoms persist for more than a day, it would be wise to book a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can discuss your pet's situation in more detail and ensure they're on the road to recovery.
