Help, I'm really worried about my dog after her c-section, and I'm not sure what's going on. My sweet lab mix, Daisy, had her pups a week ago, and since the surgery, she's been acting so differently. Before, she was super affectionate and wouldn't leave my side, but now she seems distant and uninterested in both me and her puppies. She's still eating and drinking normally, thankfully, but she seems to avoid contact with her babies and just stares off into space a lot of the time. I expected her to need some time to recover, but this doesn’t seem right. How long should I wait for her to bounce back to her old self before I should really be concerned? Could this be some kind of post-surgery depression or confusion from the meds? Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated!
Thanks for reaching out with your concern! After a C-section, it's not uncommon for dogs to exhibit some changes in behavior, and understanding these changes can help provide the best care for your pet.
Your dog might seem more tired than usual, and that's perfectly normal. The surgery and anesthesia can take a toll on her energy levels. She may also exhibit signs of discomfort, like restlessness or not wanting to lie down; this is often due to the incision site. Additionally, some dogs might show anxiety or protective behavior toward their puppies, which is a natural maternal instinct.
At home, ensure she has a quiet, comfortable space to rest, away from too much noise and activity. Encourage gentle interactions and provide her with ample water and nutritious food to aid her recovery. Check her incision daily for any signs of swelling, redness, or discharge, and contact a vet if you notice anything unusual.
Keep an eye out for signs that could indicate a more serious issue, such as vomiting, lethargy, refusal to eat or drink, trouble breathing, or signs of infection in her incision.
If you notice these symptoms, or if her behavior drastically changes, it’s important to seek professional guidance. Please consider booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet to discuss any concerns and ensure your dog gets the care she needs.
