Question:

Dog ate spaghetti!!! What do I do!

I'm kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. So, I just got back from making dinner, and to my horror, I discovered that my sneaky pup, Max, got into the leftover spaghetti I accidentally left on the counter. He devoured almost the entire plate, and now I'm worried because I know dogs aren’t supposed to have that much human food, especially pasta with sauce. The spaghetti had garlic and onions in it, which I’ve heard can be harmful to dogs. Max seems normal at the moment—he's wagging his tail and looking pretty pleased with himself—but I'm scared soon he might show some symptoms. Has anyone else experienced something like this? How worried should I be, and is there anything I need to do right away to help him stay safe? Would love any insight or reassurance, because my vet isn’t available until tomorrow. Thanks so much!

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like your furry friend had quite the Italian adventure today. Generally, spaghetti itself isn’t harmful to dogs, so there’s no need to panic. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind, especially if the spaghetti had any sauce.

Many common ingredients in pasta sauces, like garlic and onions, can be toxic to dogs. If the spaghetti was plain, you’re likely in the clear. But if it had seasonings or tomatoes, watch for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a decrease in appetite.

At home, make sure your pup has plenty of fresh water available, as sudden changes in diet can sometimes lead to an upset tummy. It’s a good idea to keep them on their regular dog food and avoid giving more human food to prevent digestive issues.

Keep a close eye on your dog's behavior over the next 24 hours. If you notice any concerning symptoms like persistent vomiting, blood in their stool, or if your dog seems really unwell, it might be time to talk to a vet.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
