I'm really at my wit's end right now and hope someone here can offer some advice. My dog, Max, has stopped eating and drinking over the past five days, and it's breaking my heart. We've been to the vet multiple times, and they've run a bunch of tests, but there hasn't been a definitive diagnosis. They mentioned something about possible anorexia, which I didn't even know could happen to dogs, and suggested some treatments, but nothing seems to be working. Max just seems so lethargic and uninterested in food, not even his favorite treats. I’m trying everything I can think of. I’ve tried different types of food, even hand-feeding him, but he just sniffs and turns away. I've changed his water bowl, thinking maybe it was the issue, but it's not helping. He's usually such an energetic dog, and seeing him like this is tearing me apart. Has anyone been through something similar or have any ideas on what else I can try? I'm desperate here.
Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It's always worrying when our furry friends aren’t eating or drinking as they should. Anorexia in dogs, combined with a lack of drinking, can be caused by a variety of issues ranging from dental pain or gastrointestinal problems to stress, infections, or more serious internal conditions.
At home, try offering your dog some small bites of boiled chicken or plain rice, as these can sometimes entice them to eat. Ensure that they have access to fresh, clean water at all times. You might also try adding a little low-sodium chicken broth to the water to make it more appealing.
Keep an eye out for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or any signs of pain when touched, as these could indicate something more severe. If you notice any of these signs or if your dog continues to avoid food and water, it’s critical to seek veterinary care promptly to prevent dehydration or other complications.
