Question:

Does the cat we're about to buy have any visible issues?

I'm hoping some of you experienced cat parents can help me out. My partner and I are super excited about possibly bringing this adorable cat into our home, but we're a little nervous because we want to make sure she doesn't have any visible health issues we might be overlooking. We visited her at the breeder's place yesterday, and she's such a sweetheart, purring up a storm and nuzzling our hands. She looked healthy at first glance, but neither of us are experts, and we know it can be easy to overlook something important. Her eyes were clear, her coat seemed shiny, and she had a good energy level, but we're not really sure what specific things we should be checking for here. Do you have any tips or specific signs we should look out for before making this big decision? We want to make sure she’s happy and healthy so any advice would really help. Thanks so much in advance! 🐾

Answer:

Hi there,

Congratulations on your potential new furry family member! When welcoming a new cat into your home, it's wise to ensure they're healthy right from the start. Here are a few things to look for that might indicate any visible health issues.

First, check the cat's eyes and nose. They should be clear and free from discharge. Redness or excessive tearing can suggest an infection or allergies. Next, look at their ears, which should be clean and free of heavy wax or any unpleasant odor, signs of potential mites or infection.

The cat's coat can tell you a lot about their health, too. A shiny, smooth coat is ideal. If you see patchy fur or excessive dandruff, they might have skin problems or even parasites like fleas.

Observe the cat's behavior; lethargy or excessive hiding can be a sign of stress or illness. Finally, their gums should be pink and moist; pale or very red gums could indicate dental or systemic issues.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to have a vet take a closer look. Even in the absence of apparent issues, arranging a vet check-up ensures your cat's in tip-top shape.

Please feel free to book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet, where we can discuss any specific concerns and give your new kitty a clean bill of health from the comfort of your home.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
