Does my dog's spay incision site look okay?

I'm really worried and could use some advice. I recently had my sweet Daisy spayed, and it's been about a week since the surgery. I've been trying to keep an eye on her incision, but I'm not sure if it's healing properly. The area looks a bit red and swollen, and there seems to be a little discharge that doesn't smell great. Daisy has been licking at it when I'm not looking, despite the cone she's supposed to be wearing. She's acting mostly normal otherwise, but I'm concerned something might be wrong. I’m not sure what a normal healing incision should look like and whether this is something I should rush her to the vet for. Does this sound like something I need to be really worried about? Any advice or similar experiences would really help calm my nerves right now! Thanks in advance.

Answer

Hi there! It's great that you're keeping such a close eye on your dog's spay incision site. Proper healing is important to ensure your furry friend is comfortable and recovers well.

After a spay surgery, the incision should look clean with edges that are slightly raised and pink. A small amount of redness and swelling is normal, but these should gradually decrease over the next few days. You might also see a small scab or crusty area as part of the healing process.

However, you'll want to watch for signs that could indicate a problem. If you notice excessive swelling, bright red or bleeding around the incision, pus or any unusual discharge, it's time to consult a vet. Similarly, if your dog is constantly licking or biting at the area, seems to be in distress, or has a fever, these could be signs of infection or irritation, and you'll want to seek professional help.

At home, keep the area clean and dry. Prevent your dog from licking the incision by using an Elizabethan collar if recommended. Limit her activity to discourage any strains on the incision.

If you're unsure whether things are looking as they should, I encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We'd be happy to take a closer look and offer personalized advice for your pup's recovery!
