I’m kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. My cat, Mittens, has been behaving super strangely over the past few days, and I'm worried. Normally, she's the sweetest cuddle bug, but suddenly she's become really aggressive and is hissing at everyone. She’s also been drooling a lot more than usual and has started hiding in weird places around the house. I’m terrified because a few days ago, I caught her playing with something that looked like a bat outside. I called the vet, but they can’t see her until next week, and the wait is driving me insane. Am I overthinking this, or could she actually have rabies? I don’t want to put her through any unnecessary stress, but I’m also really concerned for her health and safety. Any advice or experiences you all could share would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!
Hello there! It's completely understandable to be concerned about your cat, and I'm here to help ease your worries. Rabies is a rare but serious disease, especially in cats. If your cat is fully vaccinated, the risk is quite low.
The classic symptoms of rabies in cats can include sudden behavioral changes, unprovoked aggression, excessive drooling, and lack of coordination. However, many other conditions can lead to similar signs, such as anxiety, dental issues, or even an injury.
At home, observe your cat closely. Look for other indications such as changes in appetite, lethargy, or any physical injuries that might cause discomfort. Providing a quiet, safe space and calming their environment can also help if the behavior changes stem from stress.
It’s important to watch for serious signs like seizures, prolonged aggression, or paralysis. If your cat starts showing these or if you're still uncertain, it’s crucial to consult a vet as soon as possible.
I'd recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can assess your cat's symptoms in more detail and guide you on the next best steps. Your peace of mind and your cat's wellness are what matter most. Take care!
