Does my cat have jaundice?

I'm really worried about my cat and could use some advice. Luna, my three-year-old tabby, has been acting a bit off lately. Over the past few days, I've noticed her appetite has decreased, and she's not as playful as she usually is. I initially thought it might just be the changing weather, but today I realized that her gums and the whites of her eyes look a bit yellowish. I’m freaking out because when I looked it up online, it said it might be jaundice. Has anyone else experienced this with their cats? What could be causing it, and should I rush her to the vet right away? I’m trying not to panic, but she means the world to me, and I want to make sure she’s okay. Any suggestions or similar experiences would really help calm my nerves.

Answer

Thanks for the question! If you're noticing yellowing of your cat's skin, eyes, or gums, jaundice could indeed be a concern. Jaundice in cats often points to liver issues, such as feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), liver infections, or even blockages in the bile duct. Other potential causes could include blood-related problems or diseases affecting red blood cells.

Keep an eye on your kitty’s behavior. Are they eating and drinking normally, or is there any vomiting or weight loss? It’s important to check for these signs as they can accompany jaundice and offer more clues about what might be going on.

At home, try to ensure your cat is eating well. Cats can be very sensitive to not eating, especially if they go for more than 24 hours without food. Warm up their food slightly or offer different textures and flavors to help stimulate their appetite.

However, if you observe worsening symptoms, such as severe lethargy, rapid breathing, or increased vomiting, it's crucial to seek veterinary attention quickly, as these could indicate a serious condition.

I recommend setting up a video consult with one of our veterinarians at Dial A Vet. They can assess your cat’s current health status and advise on the best next steps in care.
