Do we do surgery now, or next heat cycle on my 3yo dog with ovarian stump and enlarged uterine stump remnant?

I’m really struggling with a decision and could use some advice. My 3-year-old dog was spayed a while back, but the vet recently discovered she has an ovarian stump and an enlarged uterine stump remnant. This means she's still going through hormonal cycles, which isn't what I expected after the spay. The vet suggests surgery to remove the remnants, but we’re not sure whether to go through with it immediately or wait until after her next heat cycle. I'm terrified of putting her through unnecessary surgery, especially since she’s already had a rough time with her initial spay. On the other hand, I worry about the complications of leaving things as they are. Has anyone else been through this? How did you decide what to do? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It sounds like you're dealing with quite a unique situation with your furry friend. An ovarian stump and an enlarged uterine stump remnant can sometimes occur after a spay surgery if any ovarian or uterine tissue remains. This can lead to symptoms similar to those of a dog in heat, such as swelling or discharge.

Deciding whether to proceed with surgery now or wait can depend on several factors, including your dog's overall health, symptoms, and risk of complications. If she's showing signs of distress or other health issues, surgical intervention might be preferable sooner rather than later. If she's stable and not experiencing severe symptoms, waiting until the next heat cycle might be an option, but it's something that should be carefully considered with veterinary guidance.

In the meantime, monitor your dog for any changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels, and look out for signs of infection, such as fever or unusual discharge. If any of these occur, it becomes more pressing to take action quickly.

Given the complexity of your dog's condition, I highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can evaluate your dog's specific needs and create a tailored plan for her care.
