Question:

Do Vets judge cat owners who have declawed cats?

I'm really in need of some advice and possibly a little reassurance. I adopted my cat, Whiskers, a few years ago from a shelter. She was already declawed by her previous owner, and I've done my best to provide her a comfy, happy life since then. I recently moved to a new city and need to find a local vet, but I’m super anxious about the first visit. I’ve heard such mixed opinions about declawing from people, and I'm worried the vet might judge me or even treat Whiskers differently because of it. I did my research and know it’s controversial, and I’d never choose it myself, but here we are. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do vets actually criticize pet owners for things like this, even when it was out of our control? Just want to be sure we’re getting off on the right foot, and Whiskers gets the best care possible. Any thoughts or experiences would really help ease my nerves. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! It's wonderful that you're reaching out for advice on this. Declawing is indeed a topic that brings up a lot of emotions both for pet owners and veterinary professionals. The most important thing to remember is that our focus is always on the well-being and happiness of your cat.

In recent years, many vets have learned more about the long-term impacts that declawing can have on cats, and there is a growing focus on alternatives to manage scratching, such as regular nail trims, scratching posts, and soft nail caps. But don't worry—we're not here to judge! We know that pet owners make decisions with their pets’ best interests at heart, often based on the information available at the time.

If your cat is already declawed, it's key to watch out for signs of discomfort, like limping, reluctance to walk or play, or changes in their behavior. Making sure their environment is comfortable with soft surfaces and checking their paws regularly for any irritation can help.

If you're seeing signs of pain or behavioral changes, or if you simply want to discuss how to best care for your cat’s paws moving forward, it might be a good idea to book a video consult with one of our friendly vets on Dial A Vet. We're here to help support you in looking after your furry friend!

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
