Do she really need rabies booster 3 months after her yearly vax?

I'm feeling pretty confused and worried about my dog, Luna. She got her yearly vaccines a few months ago and everything seemed fine—no adverse reactions or anything. But now my vet is saying she needs another rabies booster just three months after her annual shot. I thought rabies vaccines were supposed to last at least a year, if not longer! I'm concerned about giving her another dose so soon. Am I missing something? Has anyone else had to do this? I trust my vet, but this just feels out of the ordinary to me. Can anyone share their experiences or advice? I just want to make sure I'm doing what's best for Luna's health. Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer

Thanks for the question! It's great that you're staying on top of your pet's vaccinations. Whether your pet needs a rabies booster depends on local regulations and the type of vaccine used. Some areas may have requirements for more frequent boosters. Typically, after the initial series of vaccinations, boosters are given annually or every three years, depending on the vaccine.

If your vet recommended a booster three months after the annual shot, it could be due to local laws or specific health considerations for your pet, such as travel plans to areas with high rabies risk or updates in vaccination protocols.

At home, you can ensure your pet stays safe by avoiding situations where they might interact with wildlife, which could carry rabies. However, remember that vaccinations are the most effective way to protect against this fatal disease.

Watch for any signs of adverse reactions after vaccinations, such as facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, and report these to your vet.

For personalized advice regarding your pet's rabies vaccination schedule, consider booking a video consult with one of our licensed vets through Dial A Vet. It's always best to discuss your pet's needs directly with a professional who can provide tailored guidance.
