Diet recommendations for senior dog losing weight

Help, I'm really worried about my sweet old boy, Max. He's a 12-year-old Labrador, and lately, I've noticed he's been losing weight even though his appetite seems normal. He still eats his meals, but his once-muscular frame is looking a bit bony, and it breaks my heart. I took him to the vet last month, and they couldn't find anything obviously wrong with him after running some tests. They suggested altering his diet, but they didn't give me a lot of specifics. Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of food or supplements have worked for your senior dogs? I'm really hoping to find a nutrition plan that will help him maintain a healthy weight without upsetting his stomach. Any advice would be so appreciated, thanks!

Answer

Thank you for your question! Weight loss in senior dogs can be concerning, so it’s great that you’re looking into this. As dogs age, they can experience changes in metabolism, dental issues, or conditions like kidney disease or diabetes, all of which might lead to weight loss.

First, it's important to ensure your dog is eating the right amount of food for their age and size. Senior dogs often benefit from a diet that's easy to digest and higher in quality protein, as they might have reduced ability to process certain nutrients efficiently. Look for foods labeled specifically for senior dogs, which are often formulated to meet these needs.

You can also try offering smaller, more frequent meals to encourage your dog to eat more. If your dog has dental problems, switching to a softer diet may help.

At home, keep an eye on your dog’s behavior and look for any additional signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, or changes in urination. These could indicate a more serious health issue that requires veterinary attention.

Please consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can discuss your dog’s diet in more detail and evaluate whether a check-up is necessary to rule out any underlying health concerns.
