I'm really struggling right now and could use some advice. About two months ago, I decided to bring a dog into our home, thinking it would be great for our family. My cat, Whiskers, who has been my world for the last eight years, started acting differently after the pup arrived. At first, I thought it was just the usual adjustment period, but lately, Whiskers has been lethargic, eating less, and just seems off. I took him to the vet, and they couldn’t pinpoint anything specific, but I can't shake the feeling that my decision to get a dog might somehow be causing this decline. I know cats are sensitive to changes, but could this really be affecting him so much? Has anyone else experienced something like this? I’m feeling really guilty and just want to do right by both of them. Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated.
Hello there! First of all, I'm really sorry to hear you're worried about your cat. Pets can sense big changes, like a new dog, and may react in different ways, but rest assured that getting a dog isn’t likely to cause your cat to become seriously ill.
Sometimes, the introduction of a new pet can stress out your cat, potentially leading to behavioral changes or minor illnesses. You might notice signs like hiding, reduced appetite, or grooming less or more than usual. These are your cat's ways of adapting to a new situation.
To help your cat adjust, try to create a calm, safe space where they can retreat and feel secure. Ensure they have access to fresh water, a quiet area to rest, and a litter box away from the new dog’s reach. Gradually introduce the new dog to help them both adjust slowly.
Keep an eye on your cat for any worrying signs that might indicate a more serious problem, such as vomiting, diarrhea, significant weight loss, or lethargy. These could suggest a need for more attention.
If you notice any of these signs or if you have lingering concerns, it’s a good idea to book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We can guide you further and help put your mind at ease.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
