My dog has had diarrhea for three days now; should I be worried or try anything specific at home before taking him to the vet? What are some common causes, and could it be something he ate?

Answer

Hi there! Totally understand your concern—it's never fun when your pup isn't feeling their best. Diarrhea in dogs can be pretty common and sometimes clears up on its own, but it's important to keep an eye on a few things just to be safe.

First, it's important to check for signs of dehydration since diarrhea can lead to fluid loss. Gum dryness, lethargy, and sunken eyes can be dehydration indicators. Make sure your dog is drinking plenty of water. If they’re not, you can encourage fluid intake by offering small amounts of Pedialyte mixed with water.

Also, any signs of vomiting, blood in the diarrhea, or a change in behavior—like if your dog seems unusually tired—should prompt a visit to the vet. These could be signs of something more serious going on.

Dietary indiscretion (eating something they shouldn't have) could absolutely be a cause. Dogs are curious by nature! Some common culprits include fatty foods, bones, or garbage. If you suspect your dog might have gotten into something harmful, like chocolate (watch out for it in Halloween treats!) or grapes, please seek veterinary help straight away. Theobromine doses over 20 mg/kg can be toxic for dogs, as can any amount of grapes or raisins.

Feel free to try a bland diet at home, like boiled chicken and rice, to see if it helps settle things down. But if the diarrhea persists beyond 48 hours, or if you see any of the warning signs I mentioned earlier, definitely check in with your vet.
