Help, I’m at a loss and could really use some advice. My sweet dog, Max, who was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, has started losing weight really quickly, and it’s freaking me out. We’ve been religious about his insulin schedule and diet, but it seems like nothing is working. He’s gone from a healthy 55 pounds to just under 40 in a matter of weeks. He still seems alert and playful, but the weight loss is terrifying me. We’ve been back to the vet several times, and they’ve even adjusted his insulin dose, but I don’t see any improvement. I’m worried that something else might be going on, but I don’t know what to ask the vet anymore. Has anyone else been through this? What else should I be doing or asking about?
Thanks for reaching out about your dog's weight loss. I'm sure this situation is concerning for you, and I’m here to help. Rapid weight loss in a diabetic dog can be due to a few causes. It might be as simple as a short-term dietary issue or as complex as the diabetes not being properly controlled.
When diabetes in dogs isn't well-managed, they can't effectively use glucose for energy, leading their bodies to burn muscle and fat, causing weight loss. It's crucial to confirm your dog's insulin dosage is correct, as unexpected weight changes could indicate that their current regimen isn't fully meeting their needs.
At home, ensure your dog remains on a consistent diet designed for managing diabetes, weighing out food portions carefully and feeding at regular intervals. Keep a close eye on their hydration, as diabetic dogs are prone to increased thirst and urination.
Please monitor for any signs of more serious issues, such as excessive lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or an increase in appetite. These could indicate complications like diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires immediate attention.
I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet to review your dog’s current treatment plan. We can discuss any recent changes and make adjustments to help them gain back some healthy weight.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
