I'm really hoping for some advice or words of encouragement here. My heart is breaking as I’m writing this. I found out that my 12-year-old tabby, Milo, has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. He’s been my snuggle buddy through so many ups and downs, and seeing him like this is just devastating. He’s lost a lot of weight, and he spends most of his time sleeping now. He used to chase his little toy mice around the house like a little hunter, but now it’s hard to even get him interested in the things he used to love. The vet gave me special renal diet food, but Milo barely touches it. I’m terrified that I’m going to lose him and don’t know what else I can do to help him feel better or more comfortable. Any tips or personal experiences you could share would mean the world to me. Thanks in advance for taking the time to listen and help a desperate furmom out.
Hello there, I'm so sorry to hear about your worries with your kitty dealing with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). It’s a challenging condition, but with the right care, your feline friend can still live comfortably.
CKD in cats can cause symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and poor appetite. It essentially means that your cat's kidneys aren't functioning as they should, so waste can build up in their body.
At home, ensure your cat is staying hydrated since CKD often leads to dehydration. Always have fresh water available, and consider offering water in different places around your home or even try a pet fountain. Wet food is also a great choice because it increases fluid intake.
Monitor your cat closely. If you notice signs like vomiting, severe lethargy, not eating, or strange behavior, it's important to seek veterinary care promptly as these can indicate serious issues.
Let's work together to ensure your kitty gets the best care! I highly recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets here on Dial A Vet to get tailored advice for managing your cat's CKD and to answer any other questions or concerns you may have.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our
