Question:

Continuous Throw Up from Cat

I'm really worried right now and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Luna, has been throwing up almost non-stop for the past two days. At first, I thought it might be something minor, maybe hairballs or that she ate too fast, but now it’s happening multiple times a day, and it just doesn’t seem normal. It’s a mix of clear liquid and some food, and she’s been acting lethargic, which is totally unlike her usual playful self. She’s still drinking water but hasn’t touched her food since yesterday morning, and I'm getting really anxious. I've called our vet, but they can't fit us in until next week. Has anyone experienced something similar with their fur babies? I’m just desperate to help her feel better and to know if I should look for emergency care or if there’s something I might try at home in the meantime. Thanks a lot for any suggestions you can offer.

Answer:

I'm sorry to hear your cat isn't feeling well! Vomiting can be concerning, and it can be caused by a range of things. Some common causes include eating too quickly, hairballs, dietary indiscretion (like eating something they shouldn’t have), or even an underlying illness such as an infection or a more chronic condition like kidney disease or hyperthyroidism.

At home, you can try feeding smaller, more frequent meals to see if that helps. Make sure to keep your cat hydrated. Offer fresh water often, and you could also try offering ice cubes to encourage licking, which can help with hydration if they're reluctant to drink. Also, try to gently groom your cat more frequently to help reduce hairballs.

However, there are certain signs that indicate it’s time to see a vet. If your cat has been vomiting for more than 24 hours, is vomiting multiple times in a day, appears lethargic, or shows signs of pain, it's important to get them looked at promptly. Blood in the vomit or stool is also a red flag.

I strongly recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. We can help assess your cat’s situation more thoroughly and guide you on the best next steps. Your kitty's comfort and health are our priorities, and we're here to support both of you through this!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
