Concerned about sore caused by e collar on my cat

Something weird just happened, and I could really use some advice. My cat, Luna, has been wearing an e-collar since Wednesday because of her habit of over-grooming, and this morning I noticed a sore forming on the back of her neck. I’m freaking out a bit because I thought the collar was supposed to help her heal, not cause more problems. It looks pretty red and seems to be bothering her. She’s been extra fidgety and keeps trying to rub her head against furniture to get it off, which isn’t helping. It’s Sunday, so her vet is closed, and I’m really worried about what to do next. Has anyone else dealt with this before, or have any suggestions on how to keep her comfortable until I can get her in?

Answer

I completely understand why you're worried. Those E-collars can be uncomfortable for our feline friends, and it’s not uncommon to see some irritation or soreness from where the collar rubs against the skin.

The sore you’re noticing might be due to friction or pressure from the collar. Sometimes, moisture can get trapped underneath, particularly if your cat is a bit of a drooler or if they've been outside in damp conditions, causing irritation or even a slight infection.

To care for it at home, gently clean the affected area with a mild saline solution or warm water. Make sure the E-collar isn't too tight—adjust it so you can comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your cat's neck. You might also want to line the collar edges with some soft fabric to lessen friction.

Watch for signs that the sore might be getting worse: increasing redness, swelling, pus discharge, or if your cat is showing signs of distress like excessive licking or not eating. These could indicate an infection needing more serious attention.

If that sore doesn’t seem to improve or if you notice any of the concerning signs, it would be best to book a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet for more personalized advice. They’ll be able to guide you towards the best next steps for your kitty’s comfort and health.
