Question:

Chronic (3+months diarrhea in young cat. Vet is out of ideas.

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and would really appreciate some advice. My young cat, Luna, has been dealing with chronic diarrhea for over three months now, and I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out how to help her. We've been to the vet multiple times, they've run all sorts of tests, tried different diets, and even prescribed medications, but nothing seems to be working. The vet seems to have hit a wall, and I'm just so worried about Luna. She's still playful and seems okay otherwise, but I can tell she's uncomfortable. Her litter box habits are all over the place, and it's heart-wrenching to see her struggle. Has anyone else gone through something similar with their cat? I'm open to any suggestions or ideas you might have — at this point, I'm willing to try pretty much anything to help my fur baby feel better. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Answer:

Hi there,

I'm really sorry to hear your young kitty has been having such a long bout of diarrhea. I know how tough that can be for both of you. Diarrhea lasting more than a few months can be due to several factors, including food allergies, intolerances, parasites that might have been missed, or even inflammatory bowel disease.

You could try an elimination diet to see if a specific ingredient is affecting your cat’s tummy. Switching to a high-fiber diet or adding a little pureed pumpkin to their food can sometimes help firm things up. Ensure your cat is drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Keep an eye out for signs like lethargy, weight loss, or blood in the stool, as these could indicate a more serious issue needing urgent attention.

I know you’ve already been working with your vet, but it might be worth getting a second opinion or considering further diagnostic tests like a fecal culture or ultrasound to better understand what's happening.

Take care!

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
