Cats eyes have changed. Is it bleeding? Feline leukemia?

I'm really worried about my cat, Luna. Over the past few days, I've noticed her eyes look really different. They're not as bright as they used to be, and there's this weird reddish tint that almost looks like they might be bleeding. It's freaking me out, and I'm scared it might be something serious like feline leukemia. She hasn't been herself lately—sleeping more than usual and not showing much interest in her favorite toys. I know cats can hide their illnesses, so I'm terrified I'm missing something important. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat? What should I do? I plan on taking her to the vet, but I’m just looking for some peace of mind in the meantime. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. Noticing a change in your cat's eyes can be alarming, and it's good that you're looking for guidance. Eye changes in cats can happen for several reasons, ranging from mild to serious conditions.

If you’re seeing redness, it could be conjunctivitis, which is similar to pink eye in humans. This can be caused by allergies, infections, or irritants. Sometimes, changes in the eyes might be due to more serious conditions like trauma, uveitis (inflammation inside the eye), or indeed, diseases like feline leukemia, which can affect many parts of the body, including the eyes.

For at-home care, gently wipe any discharge with a clean, damp cloth, and try to keep your cat from rubbing its eyes. Make sure their environment is calm and free from dust or smoke that might cause irritation.

Please watch for signs like persistent redness, discharge, squinting, or changes in the size of the pupils. If your cat’s eyes look cloudy, if they're bumping into things, or if their overall behavior changes, these could indicate a more serious problem needing prompt attention.
