Hello! It sounds like you're having a bit of a struggle getting your cat to eat their hydrolyzed diet. This is a common issue, and you're not alone. Cats can be particular about their food, especially when it comes to prescribed diets.
Hydrolyzed protein diets are often recommended for cats with food allergies or gastrointestinal sensitivities. The proteins in these diets are broken down into smaller components, making them less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. However, the taste and texture might not appeal to every kitty.
To help your cat transition, try mixing a small amount of the hydrolyzed food with their previous food, gradually increasing the new diet over a week. Warming the food slightly can also enhance its aroma, which might entice your furry friend. If your cat refuses to eat entirely, don't let this hunger strike last more than 24 hours, as it could lead to further health issues.
Keep an eye out for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, as they could indicate a more serious problem. If your cat continues to avoid eating or shows signs of illness, it’s essential to have a conversation with a vet.
Consider booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals to discuss your cat's needs in more detail and explore alternative dietary strategies. We're here to help!
Cat won't eat Hydrolyzed RX food
I'm feeling pretty stressed and could really use some advice. My cat, Smokey, who has just been diagnosed with a food allergy, was prescribed Hydrolyzed RX food by our vet. But she absolutely refuses to eat it. I’ve tried everything I can think of, like warming it up a bit, adding water to make it more like a stew, and even trying to mix in a tiny bit of her old food to transition her slowly. Nothing seems to be working and I’m worried because it’s important for her health to get this allergy under control. I’ve seen her lose a little weight already and it’s breaking my heart. Has anyone else gone through something similar? Are there any tricks or tips that might encourage her to eat this food? Please share any suggestions or reassurance you might have. I’m feeling really desperate and just want to do what’s best for my girl.
