cat with UTI can I wait until morning?

I really need some advice. My cat, Whiskers, has been acting a bit off today. She's been going to her litter box a lot, but not much is coming out, and she seems uncomfortable and is meowing more than usual. My gut is telling me she might have a UTI because I remember my sister's cat had similar symptoms a while back. It’s late now, and all the vets near me are closed. I'm really worried and unsure if it's okay to wait until morning to take her in. She's my little companion, and seeing her like this breaks my heart. Has anyone been through this with their cat? Any advice would be really appreciated. I just want to make sure she's okay.

Answer

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear your cat is having some trouble. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in cats can be quite uncomfortable and sometimes serious, so it's great that you're seeking advice.

While some mild cases might not require immediate vet attention, there are a few things to keep an eye on. Common signs of a UTI include frequent trips to the litter box, straining to urinate, producing only small amounts of urine, blood in the urine, or your cat appearing restless or vocalizing more than usual. If your cat is showing any of these symptoms, it’s important to monitor them closely.

Ensure your cat has access to plenty of fresh water and encourage them to drink by providing additional water bowls or even a cat water fountain. Wet cat food can also help maintain hydration. Maintaining a clean litter box is crucial too; cats often won't use a dirty one, which could lead to further issues.

However, if your cat seems unable to urinate at all, seems to be in severe pain, is lethargic, or has a bloated abdomen, these could be signs of a blockage or more serious problem and require immediate veterinary attention.

For peace of mind and to ensure your cat receives the right care, I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can help determine the next best steps for your feline friend.
