Cat with scabs on head while on solensia

I'm really looking for some advice and support right now. My sweet kitty, Luna, has been on Solensia for her arthritis for about a month, and I've noticed these strange scabs forming on her head. They seem to be getting worse, and I'm getting worried. The vet didn’t seem too concerned during our last visit and thought it might be allergies, but she’s never had anything like this before. I’m stuck wondering if this could be a reaction to the medication or if there's something else going on. Has anyone else experienced anything similar with their cats on Solensia? Any advice on what I should do next would be really appreciated. Luna’s like my little shadow, and seeing her uncomfortable is breaking my heart. Thanks in advance, everyone!

Answer

Hello there! I’m sorry to hear that your cat is experiencing scabs on their head. There can be several reasons for this, and I’ll do my best to help you understand what might be going on.

Cats can develop scabs for many reasons, including allergies, parasites like fleas, or a condition known as feline acne. Since your cat is on Solensia, used to manage arthritis pain, this is unlikely directly related to the medication. However, stress or pain can lead to over-grooming, which might further irritate the skin.

First, examine your cat’s environment. Check for any potential allergens, like a new cleaning product or change in diet. Fleas can also cause scabbing, so make sure they’re up-to-date with flea prevention. Gently cleaning the affected area with a damp cloth may help if your cat allows it, but avoid using any over-the-counter creams or ointments without consulting a vet.

Keep an eye on the scabs for any signs of infection, like increased redness, swelling, or if your cat is scratching excessively. If they seem more lethargic, aren’t eating, or the scabs are worsening, these are signs to seek professional advice promptly.
