Cat with lump on lip

friends, I’m feeling a bit on edge right now and could really use some advice. I was just brushing my cat Gizmo this morning when I noticed a small lump on his lower lip that definitely wasn’t there yesterday. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain — still eating like a little pig and purring away — but I can’t stop worrying about it! It’s a tiny bump, maybe the size of a pea, and doesn’t seem discolored or anything. I’ve checked it a couple times today, but it hasn’t changed at all. Have any of you guys experienced something like this with your fur babies? Should I be rushing him to the vet, or am I being a total worrywart? I’m just not sure what to do and could use some peace of mind!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out; I completely understand why you're worried about the lump on your cat's lip. Lumps in this area can be due to several things. Commonly, it might be an abscess from a small injury, such as a scratch or bite, especially if your cat is adventurous or interacts with other animals. Sometimes, allergic reactions or insect bites can also cause localized swelling. There's also the possibility of benign growths like papillomas or more concerning issues like tumors, which can occur in cats as they age.

At home, you can gently clean the area with a warm, damp cloth to ensure it's not just something superficial or debris. Avoid poking or prodding the lump, as that could irritate it further. Keep an eye on whether your cat is pawing at it or seems bothered since excessive scratching can lead to infection.

Monitor the lump for any changes in size, color, or texture and note if your cat shows signs of discomfort, eating difficulties, or changes in behavior, as these might indicate a serious issue. Lethargy, loss of appetite, or bleeding from the lump are also red flags.

To get a proper diagnosis and peace of mind, I suggest booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. Our team can provide a closer look to determine the best steps forward for your furry friend’s health and comfort.
