Question:

Cat with loose stools....fixed and then not fixed

I'm really hoping for some advice or guidance here because I'm at my wits' end. My poor cat, Whiskers, has been having really loose stools for the past couple of weeks, and it's been a rollercoaster trying to figure out what’s going on. I took him to the vet, and they initially thought it might be a dietary issue, so we switched his food to something more digestible. For a few days, everything seemed to improve, and I was so relieved. But then, almost out of nowhere, the problem started up again, and it's worse than before. It's just so frustrating because he's uncomfortable, and I'm constantly cleaning up after him. I've tried to follow up with the vet, and we're waiting on some tests, but in the meantime, has anyone experienced something similar with their cats? Any suggestions on what might help him get back to normal? Thanks in advance for any tips you can share.

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like you're dealing with a common but frustrating issue with your cat's digestion. Cats can experience loose stools for a variety of reasons, ranging from dietary changes to stress or even allergies. It's great that your cat was doing better for a while, but since the problem has returned, let’s look at potential causes and solutions.

Diet is often a key factor. Have there been any recent changes? Even switching between brands or types of food can lead to digestive upset. Try sticking to a consistent diet with high-quality, easily digestible ingredients.

Stress can also upset their tummy, so consider any changes in the household that could be affecting your cat. Ensure your cat has a quiet, safe space to retreat to.

For at-home care, make sure your cat stays hydrated, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Offering plain, unsweetened canned pumpkin in small amounts can often help firm up stools due to its fiber content.

Keep an eye out for any additional symptoms, such as vomiting, lethargy, or blood in the stools. These could indicate a more serious issue that needs immediate attention.

If things don't improve or you're concerned, book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can dig deeper into what's happening and help get your kitty back to feeling their best!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
