Question:

Cat with hyperthyroidism, asthma, potential kidney disease w/ cardiomyopathy, now ear infections that won't go away with antibiotics

I'm really hoping for some advice here because I'm at my wit's end. My poor cat, Whiskers, has been battling a slew of health issues lately, and I feel so helpless. First, it was hyperthyroidism, which was stressful enough, but then the vet also mentioned she has asthma and might even be dealing with early stages of kidney disease and cardiomyopathy. Just when I thought we’d made it through the worst, her ears started bothering her. They’re constantly itchy, red, and she’s obviously uncomfortable. The vet prescribed antibiotics, but after two rounds, it's like nothing has changed. I'm really worried, especially with everything else she’s going through. Has anyone else dealt with persistent ear infections in cats? Is there something I might be missing or should try? Any advice or shared experiences would mean the world to me right now. Thanks for reading.

Answer:

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear about all the health challenges your cat is facing. It's clear you're doing your best to take care of them, and I’m here to help. Chronic ear infections can be frustrating, and they might be linked to your cat’s other health conditions. Cats with hyperthyroidism or a compromised immune system, possibly due to kidney issues, may be more prone to infections. Also, various heart conditions, like cardiomyopathy, can add to their stress levels, potentially affecting their recovery.

At home, focus on keeping their ears clean and dry. Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner, and be gentle to avoid irritation. Monitor for any signs of discomfort, such as head shaking or scratching, which could indicate that the issue persists.

Keep an eye out for serious signs like discharge with a foul odor, balance issues, or unusual lethargy, as these might indicate a deeper problem needing immediate attention.

Given the array of health concerns, I recommend booking a video consult through Dial A Vet. This way, we can evaluate your cat's overall health context and tailor a treatment plan that takes all conditions into account. We're here to support you and your feline friend every step of the way.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
