Cat with high pH and blood in urine

I'm really in need of some advice and support right now. My poor kitty, Luna, just had a vet visit, and I'm freaking out a bit. The vet said her urine has a high pH, and there’s even blood in it. I'm so worried and not quite sure what to do next. Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation? Luna is usually my playful, happy little furball, but lately, she’s been lethargic and has been straining when she uses her litter box. I can't stand seeing her in discomfort. The vet mentioned something about it possibly being a urinary tract infection or even crystals, but I’m not sure yet. If you guys have any tips or home remedies while we’re waiting on further test results, I’d be so grateful. I just want my sweet Luna to feel better soon. Thanks in advance for any help or similar experiences you can share!

Answer

Hello there! I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty's troubles. It sounds like you might be dealing with a urinary tract issue, which can be quite uncomfortable for cats. A high pH in the urine often points to alkaline urine, which can lead to the formation of struvite crystals. These crystals can sometimes irritate the bladder, leading to blood in the urine.

At home, you'll want to ensure your cat is well-hydrated. Consider offering wet food if you aren't already, as it can help increase their overall water intake. Encouraging your cat to drink more water by using water fountains or adding a bit of water to their food can also be helpful in these situations.

Watch out for signs that indicate your cat might be in pain, like frequent trips to the litter box, crying during urination, or any obvious signs of discomfort. If your cat stops urinating altogether, it could be a sign of a blockage, which is an emergency situation that requires immediate veterinary care.

Please feel free to book a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your cat's symptoms in more detail and determine the best course of action. Your furry friend deserves the best care, and we're here to help!
