Question:

cat with explosive diarrhea every day, and there's no life threatening cause for it.

I'm at my wit's end and could really use some advice or support. My cat, Whiskers, has been having explosive diarrhea every single day, and it's breaking my heart to see him like this. We've been to the vet multiple times, and after a battery of tests, they've assured me there's no life-threatening cause. But still, this just can't be normal, right? Whiskers doesn’t seem to be in any pain, but cleaning up after him is becoming overwhelming, and I can tell he's getting stressed, too. We’ve tried switching diets, probiotics, and even prescribed medication, but nothing seems to help. I feel like I'm failing him. Has anyone else been through something similar with their fur baby? Any tips or suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear about your cat's tummy troubles – I know that's never any fun for either of you. There are a few reasons why your kitty might be experiencing explosive diarrhea, even when there isn't a life-threatening cause.

Food intolerance or allergies are common culprits. Cats can sometimes react poorly to certain proteins or ingredients in their diet. Stress can also wreak havoc on their digestive systems, especially if there’s been a recent change in their environment. Additionally, it's worth considering if there's been any recent exposure to new plants or cleaning products.

At home, you can try switching to a bland diet for a few days – plain, boiled chicken and rice are usually gentle on their tummies. Ensure your cat has plenty of fresh water available to prevent dehydration. You might also want to keep an eye on the litter box to monitor any changes.

In terms of serious signs to look out for, be attentive to any blood in the diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, or if your cat stops eating or drinking. These could indicate a need for immediate veterinary attention.

For ongoing diarrhea or if you're unsure about making diet adjustments yourself, I recommend scheduling a video consult with one of our veterinarians here at Dial A Vet. They can provide personalized advice and discuss next steps.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
