I'm really struggling and could use some advice. My 9-year-old tabby has been having a rough time lately, and I'm at my wits' end trying to figure out what's going on. About a month ago, she started losing weight even though her appetite is pretty normal. She's also had some bouts of diarrhea, and recently, I've noticed she's been more lethargic and hiding under the bed, which is not like her at all. The vet suspects it could be IBD, but they're also worried it might be cancer. We've done some blood tests and an ultrasound, and we're waiting for the results, but the waiting is killing me. I'm terrified of losing her and just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help her feel better. Has anyone else been through something similar with their cat? What was the outcome, and is there anything else I should be doing right now? Any advice or shared experiences would be really appreciated.
Thanks for your question. It sounds like you're dealing with some big concerns, and I’m glad you’re reaching out. Cats with symptoms that may indicate cancer or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can experience similar signs, like weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in appetite, so it’s understandable to feel uncertain.
IBD is a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, often causing discomfort and nutrient absorption issues. Cancer, unfortunately, can affect any organ and might lead to similar symptoms by disrupting normal bodily functions. In some cases, food allergies or infections are also to blame.
At home, you can try offering bland, easily digestible food and ensure your cat stays hydrated. Sometimes, small frequent meals can be gentler on the stomach. It's crucial to monitor for signs of dehydration, severe weight loss, or if your cat seems very lethargic or in pain.
If you notice blood in their stool or vomit, or if they stop eating or drinking entirely, those are signs it’s time to act quickly. Because these symptoms could indicate several different issues, some serious, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We can discuss the symptoms in more detail and consider whether diagnostic tests or a visit to your local vet would be the best next step.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
