Question:

Cat: Recurring GI Issues at the same time as Urinary Crystals?

I'm really hoping someone here can lend me a hand or some advice. My cat, Luna, has been going through a really tough time, and I'm at my wit's end. About a month ago, she started having recurring gastrointestinal issues—frequent vomiting and diarrhea, which has been hard on both of us. We've been to the vet multiple times, tried changing her diet, and even new medications, but nothing seems to work long-term. On top of that, Luna now has urinary crystals, which I understand can be extremely painful. It's heartbreaking to see her in distress and not know how to help. Has anyone else dealt with both these issues simultaneously? Is there something I might be overlooking? I just want my fur baby to feel better again. Any tips or shared experiences would be so appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Hello there! I'm really sorry to hear that your cat is dealing with these uncomfortable issues. Recurring gastrointestinal (GI) problems alongside urinary crystals can certainly be a challenge.

Firstly, the simultaneous occurrence of GI issues and urinary crystals may suggest an underlying dietary or health problem. Some common causes could be stress, diet imbalances, or a sensitivity to certain ingredients. Cats with urinary crystals can sometimes experience GI upset due to stress or the discomfort from their urinary condition.

You can help manage these issues at home by ensuring your cat stays well-hydrated. Consider introducing wet food if they’re not on it already, as this can help manage urinary health and aid digestion. Additionally, maintaining a calm environment can minimize stress, which can sometimes exacerbate both of these issues.

Watch for signs of pain (like vocalizing or hiding), frequent or painful urination, vomiting, or any changes in stool consistency, as these could indicate a more serious underlying condition needing immediate attention.

It might be beneficial to book a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They can dive deeper into your cat’s history, provide specific advice, and suggest a tailored treatment plan to get your furry friend feeling better soon!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
