Cat prescribed z/d diet, Doubts About her food allergy diagnosis

I'm really hoping to get some advice here because I'm feeling a bit lost and worried about my kitty, Luna. So, Luna's been having a tough time with some tummy issues for the past couple of months – puking occasionally and, well, let's just say her litter box deposits have been far from pleasant. Our vet recently prescribed her a z/d diet, saying she might have a food allergy. I want to trust the vet, but I'm not entirely convinced this is the right move because Luna's never had food problems before. Plus, spontaneously changing her diet feels drastic. Has anyone else here gone through something similar with their fur babies? Should I get a second opinion, or try reintroducing her old food slowly to see if it was something else causing the issue? I just want to make sure I'm doing the best thing for her. Thanks in advance for any advice or similar experiences you could share!

Answer

Hello! It’s completely normal to have questions and doubts about your cat's diagnosis. Identifying food allergies in cats can sometimes be tricky, but let’s see if we can clear things up together.

Food allergies occur when a cat’s immune system overreacts to certain ingredients in their diet, leading to symptoms like itching, vomiting, diarrhea, or skin irritations. The z/d diet your cat was prescribed is designed to help by using extensively hydrolyzed proteins that are unlikely to trigger allergic reactions.

It's possible that your cat’s symptoms might overlap with other conditions, such as parasitic infections or even stress-related behaviors. Observing your cat closely can help: look for signs like persistent itching, frequent vomiting, or changes in their stool.

At home, introduce the z/d diet as recommended, making sure to avoid any other treats or foods that could interfere with the trial. Consistency is key to seeing if the new diet resolves your cat's symptoms.

Watch out for any continued or worsening signs, such as severe vomiting, weight loss, or lethargy, which could indicate that further evaluation is needed.

If you're still concerned or your kitty isn't improving, I recommend setting up a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can dive deeper into her history and symptoms to ensure she’s on the best path to health.
