Cat popped his pimple: am I treating it right?

I'm kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. My sweet tabby, Mr. Whiskers, had this little bump on his chin that I thought was just harmless feline acne, but today he managed to pop it while grooming. Now there's this raw, red spot, and I can't stop worrying. I've gently cleaned it with warm water and a soft cloth, trying to keep it as clean as possible. I've also made sure his food and water bowls are spotless, suspecting they might've contributed to this whole mess. I haven't used any ointment or anything because I'm paranoid about making it worse. Has anyone else dealt with something like this, and am I doing the right things? Should I be doing more, or is there something I'm missing that might help him heal faster?

Answer

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like your kitty might have had a clogged pore or a minor bacterial infection, which can happen with cats just like with us humans. When a cat "pops" a pimple, what actually occurs is a small rupture on the skin’s surface. This can result in some temporary redness or inflammation, so it’s important to keep the area clean.

First, gently clean the affected area with warm water and a mild, pet-safe antiseptic solution. This helps prevent further infection. Avoid using any harsh human products, like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as they can irritate your cat’s skin more.

It’s essential to monitor for signs of infection: increased redness, swelling, pus, or if your cat seems in pain or starts scratching or licking it excessively. If these occur, it could indicate a more severe issue, like a bacterial skin infection, that may require antibiotics.

If the pimple site isn’t improving after a couple of days or if you notice any of these concerning symptoms, it’s a good idea to check in with a veterinarian.
